Harvey Weinstein, whose conviction for rape and sexual assault in New York was overturned by a appeals court last week, has been hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after being examined upon his arrival at the Rikers Island jail on Friday. According to Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala, doctors found that the former movie mogul required additional medical tests due to various health issues he is currently facing. “They examined him and sent him to Bellevue,” said Aidala in a statement provided by The Associated Press (AP). “He’s got a lot of problems. He’s getting all kinds of tests. He’s somewhat of a train wreck health wise.”
Weinstein, who is currently 72 years old, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for further medical evaluations after being transferred from Rikers Island jail on Friday following his arrival there earlier that day. The AP reported that Weinstein’s lawyer Aidala also mentioned that the former Hollywood film producer appeared to be in dire need of significant health care interventions due to a number of ongoing concerns which, he argued, left “Weinstein” seeming as if his current overall physical condition was less than ideal.
The news comes after Weinstein’s conviction for rape and sexual assault charges that were handed down by New York State courts in 2020 had been overturned on April 25th, following a ruling made by the appeals court of Manhattan based on the decision that too many “non-sexually related” details concerning women who alleged that they themselves experienced non-consensual sexual acts with Weinstein at various points in time were presented to jurors during his original trial.
According to AP, David Thompson Rothfeld, a spokesperson for Bellevue Hospital has provided a statement detailing how doctors are providing essential medical services as well as tending “to [Weinstein’s] medical needs” at the prison ward inside of the hospital in line with normal procedures relating to correctional healthcare provision.
As per Rothfeld, Weinstein is currently under the care and attention provided by New York City Department Of Corrections (DOC) as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services (CHS), which are both working together in order to ensure that all of his medical requirements can be fully addressed during this time.
The news follows on from the statement made by Weinstein’s defense lawyer Donna Rotunno, who remarked positively upon last week’s appeals court decision concerning her client Harvey Weinstein. “Justice was served,” she said in a public comment provided to Fox News at that time. “[Courts] cannot operate on emotion and lack of due process.”
Weinstein is expected back in court again on May 1st, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
