Rewritten article: Each year during the NFL Draft, there is always an unexpected choice that surprises everyone. This time around it was J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for Michigan and reigning national champion who suddenly rose up draft boards in recent weeks after initially not being considered a first-rounder at the beginning of the 2023 college season. Even his head coach Jim Harbaugh made an audacious prediction that McCarthy would be the very first quarterback selected, but he ended up becoming the fifth one to go off the board.
After all the speculation and rumors surrounding him, McCarthy was ultimately chosen by the Minnesota Vikings with the 10th pick in the draft after they moved ahead of the New York Jets who originally held that selection. This decision came about when Michael Penix Jr., surprisingly got picked at No.8 by the Atlanta Falcons earlier on during the draft, causing the Vikings to act quickly before it was too late. In exchange for moving up a spot and selecting McCarthy, Minnesota handed over their 11th pick as well as two further selections in rounds four and five that occurred in subsequent years’ respective picks.
McCarthy is certainly talented: throughout his career with Michigan – during which he was the starting quarterback for almost three seasons (29 games) – McCarthy completed an impressive 68.5% of passes, earning him a remarkable total score tallying at a whooping sum close to 6,000 yards and 44 touchdowns against just nine interceptions over that time span. While doubts continue swirling about whether or not he is able enough as an individual player capable of carrying his team single-handedly – McCarthy’s performance in the national championship game this past year whereby Michigan won comfortably, only serving to amplify such queries somewhat more loudly than before: with a final scoreline reading 34-13 against Washington.
However, during one particularly crucial drive of his career that occurred towards the end of last season’s Rose Bowl – which was also a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup between Michigan and Alabama – McCarthy delivered in spectacular fashion: completing an impressive pass on fourth down for 27 yards before then running with the ball himself, covering another 16 yards. He followed this up by finding Roman Wilson yet again, who caught a further 29-yard touchdown to allow them not just regain control of possession but ultimately see off the clock in such style as allowed Michigan and its players the opportunity for extra time before then triumphantly going on to win that game too.
Now McCarthy finds himself surrounded by some pretty impressive talent: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison (who will be returning from a torn ACL at some point during future games) all look like potentially brilliant partners for him moving forward in his NFL career.
